Parents as Teachers is a parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten.
During regularly scheduled home visits, PAT educators:
- Help parents understand each stage of their child’s development
- Offer practical tips on parent-child interactions that promote learning and positive behaviors.
- Introduced parents to various community resources that can support them in their most important job, being their child's first and most influential teacher.
Group Meetings offer parents the opportunity:
- To connect with other parents of young children
- Share successes and concerns
- Participate in parent-child activities designed to promote positive family interactions and learning.
Periodic Developmental Screenings are scheduled to ensure that potential problems are detected early so that later difficulties in school can be prevented.
PAT has shared remarkable successes with families in North Carolina and across the country. Overall studies indicate that children whose parents have been through PAT:
- At age 3 outperform their peers in the areas of language, problem solving and other intellectual abilities, and social development.
- Score higher on kindergarten readiness tests
- Score higher on standardized measures of reading, math and language in first through fourth grades
