A not-for-profit organization established to provide assistance to individuals or families on Hatteras Island who are suffering financial hardships. The foundation operates on monies contributed by members who participate in the rounding-up of their electric bills. (For example, if a participating member had a bill of $74.65, it would be rounded up to $75.00 for a contribution of $.35. In one year, a member may contribute as little as $.12 or as much as $11.88). Money is not distributed to the individual but is sent directly to creditors who are seeking payment on past due accounts. This money may not be applied to payment of electric bills.
Eligibility: Any Hatteras Island individual or family suffering financial burdens is eligible to apply for assistance. All applications go through a review process.

TANF (EA) is a state-optional Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) program to provide short-term assistance for eligible families, during an emergency.
Eligibility: Serves families with child under 21 that have low income, and low reserve.

Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) / Energy Share Dare County Department of Social Services

Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) is for households in a heating or cooling related emergency. Eligible households get up to $300 annually to buy fuel or to pay the electric or gas bill. Energy Share is a winter energy crisis program sponsored by Dominion North Carolina Power. Eligibility guidelines are more flexible than Crisis Intervention Program.
Eligibility: Clients must meet income and asset guidelines.

Interfaith Community Outreach provides emergency services for those who do not qualify for assistance elsewhere. Immediate needs are met when possible through a community network supported by local faith and civic organizations, businesses, other non-profits entities, government partners and private individuals.
Eligibility: Clients will be required to complete an application and adhere to a qualifying process to determine appropriate action to take.

Hotline volunteers are trained to listen and refer callers to available community support services and resources on such topics as: suicide, family problems, depression, substance abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault. All calls are confidential.
