Steps to Follow in a Medical Emergency
When an emergency occurs, one person should provide assistance while another calls for help.
- Dial 911. Give the dispatcher the required information using steps 2, 3, 4, and 5 for guidance.
- Give the location of the emergency. Include the cross streets, the room number and the telephone number you are calling from.
- Describe what happened. For example: an automobile crash, a sudden illness, etc. Tell the dispatcher what appears to be wrong. For example: the victim is bleeding, or unconscious, etc.
- Inform the dispatcher what, if any, first aid is being given.
- Do not hang up until the dispatcher hangs up. The dispatcher may tell you how to care for the victim. Return to the scene. Help care for the victim until medical assistance arrives.
Everyone should know what to do in an emergency. Call the American Red Cross at 1-800-737-9603 for information about CPR and first aid courses
