The mission of the Dare Education Foundation is to promote excellence in education in Dare County Schools. The DEF is a Non-Profit 501(c) 3 Organization established in 2002. DEF goals are to:

  • Increase continued education opportunities for DCS faculty/staff

  • Develop new and enhance existing educational programs within Dare County Schools

  • Close the achievement gap for first generation college-bound students, struggling students minorities and those with limited means



Three DEF Programs are designed to meet these goals:

The Teacher Academy Initiative celebrates the profession of teaching and supports staff development and continuing education for faculty and staff of Dare County Schools. Passport to Higher Education is DEF's talent development initiative that supports the implementation of research-based strategies that work to close the achievement gap for Dare County's low-wealth, minorities, and first- generation college-going students. DEF Awards Innovation in Education Grants in order to substantially improve or enhance the education of Dare County students.
