KINDERGARTEN

In North Carolina, children must be five years old on or before October 16 of the year, they enter school. Parents should register children several months before they are due to enter kindergarten. To determine a base school assignment, call a nearby school or the Office of Student Assignment in your school system. Dare County Schools 480-8888
By state law, all children must have the following to enter school:
- Social Security Card: Obtain from the Social Security Administration office 1-800-722-1213.
- Proof of Residence: Property deed, rental license, or utility bill must be presented. A driver's license is not accepted.
- Official Birth Certificate with Seal: Obtain from the county or state Health Department in the area where the child was born or the Bureau of Vital Records.
- Health Assessment Form: The law requires a physical examination, no earlier than 12 months before school entry, before a child can enter kindergarten. Forms are available at Dare County Schools, Dare County Department of Public Health, and area doctors’ offices. A physical exam may be obtained at Dare County Department of Public Health 475-5003.
- Immunization Records- Medical evidence signed by a physician or health/human services department
