Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mails an age appropriate hardback book to children in Dare County once a month. The first book each child receives is The Little Engine That Could. Each book mailed after that is age-appropriate. Registrations can be picked up at all Dare County Libraries and the Children & Youth Partnership office.

Eligibility: All residents of Dare County under the age of 5.

Assistance for adults to improve reading, math, and English skills. Prepares adults for GED diploma. Meets Mondays through Thursday 9 AM to 6 PM year round; Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6 PM to 9 PM during the fall and spring semesters.

Fees: None for Learning Lab. Minimal fee for the GED test.

Dare Literacy Council is a central source of information for literacy programs throughout the county. Programs are designed for individuals seeking to improve or develop reading and language skills. Core program matches students with tutors who are trained to provide confidential and individualized instruction. Existing programs affiliated with the Council are available at COA, Dare County Libraries, and the Dare County Schools. Services offered include:

  • Individual and group sessions at varying sites

  • Flexible scheduling to accommodate students' needs

  • Tutoring to prepare for GED exams

  • English as a Second Language (ESL)

  • Family literacy programs with child care (when available)

  • Transportation - arranged with advance notice
