Choosing A Summer Camp
Reprinted from Parent Partners Empower
A project of the Exceptional Children's Assistance Center
There's more to choosing a summer camp than the "hard facts" These questions include the number of campers per session, the location, cost, climate, organizational affiliation, activities offered, camper to staff ratio, etc. This information is important, but will only tell you part of the story. Following are some questions that will give the 'flavor' of the place, not just the ingredients.
QUESTIONS TO ASK... ABOUT YOUR CHILD
- What do you hope your child will gain from her experience at camp?
- What are your child’s interests?
- Is she outgoing or will she be uncomfortable starting out in a group of children she does not know?
- Keep in mind that no one knows your child better than you. Careful thought and plenty of discussion between you and your child highlight program characteristics that they want included, and identify others they want to avoid.
QUESTIONS TO ASK THE CAMP
Once you have identified a camp that offers what you are looking for, take the time to talk to the camp director or her representative. Important questions to ask are:
- What is the camp’s philosophy and how is it conveyed to the campers?
- How did the director get into camping? What motivates her (and by extension, her staff) to provide these experiences for children?
- How are the staff recruited, interviewed, and selected? Specific questions about who makes up the staff will give more in-depth information about that particular camp than a simple camper/staff ratio.
- Selecting a camp should be a shared process that involves the camp, parents, and the camper. Get the facts and the flavor before you make the choice.
