The Child Service Coordination Program (CSC) offers information, support, and resources to help assure that children grow up healthy, safe, well adjusted, and ready for school. Specially trained staff will listen to your concerns about your child and offer information or resources as needed. For families whose children are experiencing a developmental delay, staff helps to arrange medical evaluations and referrals to programs which will help your child reach their full potential.

Eligibility: Serves all Dare County Children aged birth to five.

Fees: Coordination services are at no cost to the family and are not dependent on family income.

The coalition's purpose is to raise awareness about asthma, its symptoms, treatments, and management by promoting education and materials for anyone interested. This is a clearinghouse for information regarding resources, asthma camps, support groups, etc.

The Dare County Health Department ‘s Immunization Program offers all childhood immunizations and select adult immunizations.

Eligibility: This program is open to all Dare County residents.

Fees: Immunizations are free to all children and not dependent on family income.

Miles of Smiles is a completely equipped two-chair mobile dental office, staffed by a dentist, dental assistant, and dental office manager. Services provided include exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, x-rays, white and silver fillings, pedo-crowns, and primary tooth extractions. This program is year round and locates at elementary schools in Dare and Hyde county.

Eligibility: Serves children 0-19 years old.

Fees: This program accepts, Medicaid, Health Choice, Private Dental Insurance, or the Health Department’s income based sliding fee scale

A Health Check Coordinator assists Dare County families with children from birth through age 5 in obtaining:


  • comprehensive health care check-ups

  • nutritional assessments

  • immunizations

  • vision

  • hearing and dental screenings

  • transportation

  • health insurance

Well Child provides periodic check ups for growth and development.

Please call for an appointment.
Well child checks include the following:

  • Health and family history

  • Dental screening with fluoride varnish applied to teeth up to age 3

  • Growth chart with BMI

  • Vision and Hearing Screening

  • Speech & Language

  • Developmental Screening

  • Nutritional Assessment

  • Hemoglobin & Urinalysis as indicated by age

  • Lead screening as indicated by age

  • Sickle Cell, TB Skin Test, VD & misc. labs as indicated

  • Immunizations are offered free of charge at DCHD to all children.

Eligibility: All Dare County children aged birth to 18 years are eligible for this program.

Fees: Accepts Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and private pay based on a sliding scale fee.

NC Health Choice for Children is a health insurance program for children through age 18 whose family income is too high for Medicaid but too little to afford rising health insurance premiums. Free or low cost health care is available to eligible families. This insurance covers a wide range of medical care including doctor's care, hospitalization, prescription medicine, and dental and eye care. Children with special needs may receive additional services. If you discontinue existing health insurance, there is a 2 month waiting period before you can receive coverage. This program is limited by the amount of funds available.

Eligibility: Serves children 6 to 18. Family Income determines eligibility. Children must be uninsured 2 months prior to application.

Fees: Fees are on a sliding scale.
