Kids Fest 2010 at Roanoke Island Festival Park
Children and Youth Partnership for Dare County presented its “3rd Annual KidsFest at Festival Park” on Friday, April 23, 2010 from 9:30am – 12:30pm. This event took place at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo in celebration of celebrate the Week of the Young Child.
The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. This year’s Week of the Young Child theme is “Early Years Are Learning Years”, and what better opportunity is there to embrace that theme than KidsFest!
Children participated in a variety of play opportunities, including story time, face painting, corn hole, bubbles, The Aquarium’s Shark Table, block play, wildlife Olympics, Kindermusik, a “Scents”ory table, appearances of Smokey the Bear, Magic Mike, Steve the Dream, and much, much more. Plus, the very popular fire trucks, Coast Guard, and Coastie attend this year.
Making sure children have access to high quality play and learning environment in the early years is important to ensuring a commitment to school readiness and overall success in life. Readiness is more than basic knowledge of language and math; readiness should include all facets of development: physical, cognitive, social, and emotional competence as well as positive attitudes toward learning. Play allows opportunities for children to discover, explore, and experience materials that will foster language skills, writing, cooperation, scientific and mathematical concepts, and will develop fine and gross motor skills.
