Dolly Parton started Imagination Library in 1995 in her hometown of Sevier County, Tennessee to bring books into every child’s home. The Dollywood Foundation has helped make the program successful, and today it can be replicated in other states through local sponsorships. With the help of the Outer Banks Community Foundation and several other local businesses and civic groups, Children and Youth Partnership has been able to bring Imagination Library to Dare County since March of 2008, which has provided over 24,000 books to young children in our community. With over 2,000 children currently residing in Dare County, Children & Youth Partnership continues to partner with the community to bring quality books to every zip code in the county.
Imagination Library provides an age appropriate book to children in Dare County, from birth until their fifth birthday, once a month, providing children with the opportunity to acquire up to 60 books by the time they turn five. Each book is selected by a committee that is organized by the Dollywood Foundation. This group is composed of parents, teachers, child development specialists, librarians, publishers, and others specializing in early childhood literacy.
The long term objectives of Imagination Library are: 1) to lay the groundwork for all of our children to develop proficient reading skills in order to be successful in school, and 2) to bring families together by giving them the resources they need to read to their children. When families read together it opens communication creates family time, and develops relationships. With the Imagination Library program, children receive a book in the mail that serves as a reminder to both the parents and the children to read together. When the parent stops everything else to read with their child when the book arrives int he mail, it will become a special time for the child and the parent. Children will associate reading with spending time with mom/dad and the parents will see the difference reading is making in their child's life.
Imagination Library has the potential to bring books into every home in our county and give all children the foundation they need to be successful in school. Our vision is that every month, children across Dare County will arrive home to find a new book, and a special time will be set aside for Mom or Dad to find a quiet place and read "The Little Engine That Could" , "The Gruffalo," "Giggles with Daddy, or one of many other appealing books to their child.
The cost to sponsor one child for 1 year is $23.
